Athens International Airport sits at Spata, thirty-three kilometres east of the city centre. That distance is the single most important fact about booking a companion there, and it is the fact most people underestimate. A booking at an airport hotel is not a central Athens booking with a slightly longer drive; it is a different kind of arrangement with different timing, a different supplement and a different set of things that can go wrong.
This page explains how it actually works. It is written for adults arranging a legal booking with another adult.
Companions near Athens International Airport
The Spata and Artemida hotel cluster
There is a small cluster of hotels within a few minutes of the terminal, plus more accommodation in the surrounding towns of Spata, Artemida, Loutsa and Markopoulo. These properties exist almost entirely to serve early departures and late arrivals, which means their guests keep strange hours as a matter of routine and nothing about an evening arrival is unusual there.
Travel time from central Athens
Via Attiki Odos, the airport is a genuine forty to fifty-five minutes from central Athens outside peak hours. In heavy traffic it exceeds an hour. From the northern suburbs it is somewhat shorter; from the southern coast, longer. There is no version of this journey that takes twenty minutes, and any service telling you otherwise is not planning to keep its word.
Why layover bookings are different
A layover booking has a hard deadline attached to it and a fixed start that depends on an aircraft. Both ends are outside your control and ours. The whole approach therefore has to be conservative: longer buffers, earlier confirmations, and an honest conversation about whether the window works at all.
Layovers and late arrivals
Booking on a short layover
To make a layover booking work you need roughly four hours between landing and the time you must be back at check-in. Below that, once you account for passport control, baggage, transfer to the hotel, the arrival window and the return, there is not enough left to be worth anyone’s time. We will tell you if your numbers do not add up.
Late-night landings
Athens receives flights well past midnight and airport-area hotels are geared for it. Late arrivals are among the most straightforward bookings we take here, because the roads are empty and the arrival window shrinks to something close to pure driving time.
Early-morning departures
If you have a six o’clock flight and you are staying at an airport hotel the night before, the practical option is an evening booking that ends in good time rather than one that runs to the small hours. We will not schedule something that leaves you two hours of sleep unless that is explicitly what you want.
How to time an airport booking
Give us your landing time, not your booking time
This is the single most useful thing you can do. Tell us when the aircraft is scheduled to land and we will work forwards from there. If you tell us a time you have already guessed at, the guess is usually optimistic.
Passport control and baggage
For a Schengen arrival with hand luggage only, allow twenty minutes from wheels-down to being outside the terminal. For a non-Schengen arrival with checked baggage, allow fifty to sixty. Then add the transfer to your hotel.
Building in a buffer
We will always suggest a start time later than the earliest theoretically possible one. That is deliberate. An arrival window that is met comfortably is a better evening than one that is met at a sprint, and a delayed flight is far more common than an early one.

Standard hourly rate
The companion’s published rate applies as normal, from around 120 to 150 euro per hour depending on who you book.
Airport travel supplement
The airport carries the largest travel supplement in our service area, because it is the longest journey. It is quoted upfront when you book and it does not change afterwards.
Minimum booking length
Two hours minimum for the airport area. Given a journey of the better part of an hour in each direction, a one-hour booking is not a sensible use of anyone’s evening, and we do not offer it here.
Discretion at airport hotels
Airport hotels versus city hotels
Airport hotels are the most anonymous accommodation in Attica. Nobody staying there is local, nobody is staying more than one night, and the entire building is built around people passing through at odd hours. The discretion problem largely solves itself.
Arriving separately
As everywhere, the companion arrives alone and messages on reaching the building. If your hotel has key-card lift access, tell us in advance.
Which airport hotel to choose
If you have not yet booked accommodation and the airport area is where you will be, the choice of property makes a real difference to how straightforward the evening is.
Hotels with shuttle services
Several properties near the terminal run their own shuttle. That is convenient for you but it also means your movements are visible to the shuttle driver. If that matters, a taxi or a pre-booked transfer is the more neutral option and costs very little over such a short distance.
Larger properties versus small ones
The same rule applies here as everywhere in Athens: more rooms means more anonymity. The larger airport hotels see constant turnover at every hour and pay no attention to individual movements.
Staying in Artemida or Loutsa instead
The coastal towns a few minutes south of the airport are quieter, cheaper and more pleasant than the terminal-adjacent hotels, and they are only five to ten minutes further out. If you have an evening rather than a layover, they are the better choice.
The alternative: booking in the city instead
When it is worth travelling in
If you have more than about six hours and you have never seen Athens, travelling into the city is usually the better evening. The metro runs from the airport to Syntagma in forty minutes for a few euro, the choice of companion is wider, and there is no airport supplement.
When it is not
If your window is under five hours, or you are landing after midnight when the metro has stopped, stay at the airport. The round trip will consume everything you have.
Doing both
Some clients book a companion to meet them in the city, spend the evening there, and return to an airport hotel afterwards. That works well and is priced as a single continuous booking rather than two. Tell us at the outset if that is the shape you have in mind.
Common questions
How far is the airport from central Athens?
Thirty-three kilometres, which is forty to fifty-five minutes by road outside peak hours and over an hour in heavy traffic.
Can I book from the departures lounge?
You can enquire from anywhere, but the booking itself takes place at your hotel. The airport terminal is not a venue and we do not arrange anything airside or landside within it.
What if my flight is delayed?
Tell us as soon as you know. We will move the arrival window where the companion’s schedule allows. Delays are ordinary and we plan for them; what causes problems is finding out about one after the companion has already left.
Is there a minimum booking for the airport?
Yes, two hours. The journey is too long to make a one-hour booking sensible for anyone involved.
Do you cover Spata and Artemida?
Yes, along with Loutsa, Markopoulo and the surrounding area east of Attiki Odos, all on the airport supplement.
Can I book for a 3am arrival?

How much notice do you need for an airport booking?
Ideally several hours, and the day before is better. It is not a journey that can be improvised at short notice, and the earlier you book the more choice you have.
Do you cover the airport in winter?
Yes, all year. Winter journeys are actually quicker because Attiki Odos is clear, and availability is easier than in summer.
